Action events

Wai Care is involved in a variety of action projects throughout the year and you can join in! In the winter months we are busy with riparian restoration projects such as planting native plants around our stream banks. Riparian plantings help to shade streams and prevent erosion so the water is kept cool and clear.

During the summer we are busy with stream clean ups, weed removal at planting sites and storm water drain painting events at local schools and community centres.

Bioblitz: This fun and educational event is a scientific race against time. The goal is to count as many species as possible in a 24-hour survey of a large urban area. BioBlitz is a unique opportunity for scientists, students and the public to experience the vast array of species (biodiversity) living in an urban reserve.

Conservation week: Conservation Week is about showing how much you love New Zealand!  Join people all across the country to celebrate New Zealand's unique wildlife, our incredible natural areas, and the places that are part of our history. This annual event is held in September and includes community events, education activities and conservation television programming.

Wai Care expo: This is the annual Wai Care event where we all get together to celebrate our achievements over the past year with our annual awards. We also learn about what others are doing and mix and mingle with other people interested in protecting our freshwater environments.

EcoEvents: EcoEvents is a cool new website that lists a variety of eco events throughout the Auckland area. If you are looking for a fun eco project to help out, or go on an educational hike, or help plant trees, or learn about organic gardening have a look at this site. http://www.ecoevents.org.nz/

Seaweek: Seaweek is about exciting and inspiring all New Zealanders to renew their connection with the sea. It’s not just for children or those involved with formal education – it’s a time for all of us to get to know our ocean, its habits, characteristics and inhabitants - check out what Seaweek events are on near you. http://www.seaweek.org.nz

NZAEE: The New Zealand Association for Environmental Education co-ordinate the networking event 'Green Drinks'. NZAEE work with a different "host" every month who provide the venue and run the event however they like. The aim of Auckland's Green Drinks is to get people from different professions and backgrounds together to talk sustainability… it’s about scientists talking to ad execs, urban planners talking to teachers, business leaders talking to not-for-profits, engineers talking to artists, academics talking to TV producers, and actors talking to architects. http://www.greendrinks.org
