Wai Care activities

Activities that can be supported through the Wai Care programme are outlined below. The programme can be tailored to suit the needs of different participants.

Water quality monitoring and data related activity

  • Visual assessment and habitat assessment
  • Physical tests e.g. pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), water clarity, temperature
  • Chemical tests: nitrogen and phosphorous
  • Biological: Invertebrate identification and classification
  • Entering monitoring data onto the Wai Care website
  • Data interpretation e.g. for reporting, comparative studies

Riparian health – direct action

  • Weeding
  • Planting with native eco-sourced species
  • Litter clean ups
  • Pest control
  • Monitoring – e.g. pests, plant growth
  • Reporting pollution to the Pollution Hotline

Increasing knowledge and learning opportunities

  • School projects – primary, secondary and tertiary studies
  • In-class workshops
  • Fieldtrips
  • Events – public or for specific audiences
  • Catchment studies
  • Drain painting/stenciling

Advocacy and communications

  • Submissions e.g. to Auckland Council planning processes
  • Displays
  • Talks or presentations
  • Blogs/websites
  • Posters
  • Teaching/talking to others about the issues and possible actions
  • Newspaper articles
