Activities that can be supported through the Wai Care programme are outlined below.
Water quality monitoring and data related activity
- Visual assessment and habitat assessment
- Physical tests e.g. pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), water clarity, temperature
- Chemical tests: nitrogen and phosphorous
- Biological: Invertebrate identification and classification
- Entering monitoring data onto the Wai Care website
- Data interpretation e.g. for reporting, comparative studies
Riparian health – direct action
- Weeding
- Planting with native eco-sourced species
- Litter clean ups
- Pest control
- Monitoring – e.g. pests, plant growth
- Reporting pollution to the Pollution Hotline
Increasing knowledge and learning opportunities
- School projects – primary, secondary and tertiary studies
- Fieldtrips
- Drain painting/stenciling
